After many years (and kissing a few frogs along the way) we’ve ended up with a ‘business with intention’.
We’ve found our niche, albeit quite a broad one, and know what we do well and for whom we work best. It has taken many different experiences to work it out – good, bad and indifferent – all of which have been a revelatory part of the journey.
We love the ambitious makers, the creatives, the artisans, the craftspeople. We enjoy working with businesses who care deeply about what they do, and who capture the hearts and minds of their consumers. We look for the dreamers with big ideas. We are excited by inspirational and aspirational independent businesses.
All businesses evolve. We started out many years ago as a traditional, full-service design agency. We were the 1990s Mad Men, without quite so much of the shenanigans. You get the idea. We’ve taken Digital by Default through a few iterations during that time, fully embracing all things online and digital, enough to land and focus there.
We explore and research and really know our stuff. As we’ve become more focused, so our knowledge and application has broadened and deepened. We have taken Shopify to our hearts whilst still accommodating other leading online sales platforms. Our clients benefit from our commitment and so the intention to carve a specialist service for clients we enjoy has very much become reality.
We showcase our clients’ brilliance online. We translate their skills into successful retail. And we support the momentum of growing enterprises with all the knowledge we continue to amass for online sales.
Our clients might be at any stage of their lifecycle, from start-up to exit. We might agree to be their retained, ongoing support partner or they might want us to undertake one-off projects – including advisory and fixes. It’s a great feeling to look forward to meetings and developments. We get a buzz when advice is adopted and results start to show, it really matters.

Creating this kind of intentional approach to our business comes from years of experience. It follows relationships with misaligned values, or sectors we’re simply not engaged with. We’ve learned every lesson. We have a fantastic team that spans decades in terms of age and experience – it keeps us all balanced and on our toes.
The well-worn phrase attributed to Mark Twain states “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never work a day in your life”. We’d echo that and add that, realistically, it’s likely to take a while… but we’re there now.
